Peel Power Station – Installation of New Flue Sections
Manx Utilities is progressing with the next phase of essential work to repair the exhaust stack at Peel Power Station, following the damage caused by Storm Eowyn last year. This work will secure the long-term viability of the stack and of course operability of the power station.
Four newly manufactured replacement upper flue sections have been completed and transported to Peel, where they are currently stored inside the power station, ready to be installed.
A contract is in place with specialist steeplejacks, who will use a 220-tonne high-reach crane with sufficient lifting capacity to access the top of the stack. The crane is scheduled to be on site from Monday 16 February, with an estimated operational window of seven days for installation activities.
Weather-Dependent Operations
Craning operations cannot be undertaken during high winds, and seasonal conditions mean the installation period may be subject to short-notice changes. Previous project updates have highlighted that high-level lifting can only occur during sustained periods of light winds and must be aligned with a suitable weather window.
Given the current conditions, the installation programme remains weather-dependent, and while preparations are progressing, the schedule may shift should conditions deteriorate.
Large Vehicle Movement
The 220-tonne crane will travel from Douglas Port to Peel as a large road-going vehicle. Manx Utilities is working with the crane operator to ensure the move is completed safely and with minimal disruption. Any traffic management measures required will be communicated if needed.
