RSTS - Garff

Published: 29 August 2025

Manx Utilities’ planning application for the proposed wastewater treatment works in Garff has now been published by DEFA on the Planning Department portal.

The proposed facility will deliver modern wastewater treatment for the Garff area, with treated effluent discharged via the existing sea outfall.

Following the public display and consultation held in November 2024 at Laxey Sailing Club and Baldrine Methodist Church, several community suggestions have been thoughtfully incorporated into the final design. A key focus has been ensuring the site remains discreet and in harmony with its surroundings. Enhanced planting around the site boundary will help the development blend naturally into the landscape, while improvements to the design of visible pump stations will reduce visual impact and preserve the area’s aesthetic character.

Once complete, the scheme will bring significant environmental benefits by ending the discharge of raw sewage into Laxey Bay.

The application can be viewed at https://pbc.gov.im/online-applications/ by entering reference number 25/90738/B.

Chair, John Wannenburgh MHK, said: “This planning application marks an important milestone in improving the water quality in Laxey Bay. The modern works will treat wastewater from both Laxey and Baldrine catchments and stop the discharge of raw sewage into our marine environment. People now have the opportunity to review the planning application and the comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement to see the proposals for themselves.”
